Re: James Beard Of McGehee's Calvary

Go to your local library if you are still in Saline County, ask about the Goodspeeds.
Since the man was buried there, it is a possiblity.
It was more of a who is who book at the time. It was for anyone that had the money to pay to have an article submitted. I had relatives in Lonoke, Pulaski, and White County who submitted information. It was helpful to track down the others.
Lt. Frederick Price of White Co. was one of the men who made the trip north with Gen. Sterling Price. Frederick was a brother to my ancestor.
Most of the men like your son's ancestor were young and strong and that is the only reason they made it back. If he drew a pension later on, it is very possible you can find some interesting information there.
Saying he was at Brownsville, means he was in what is now Lonoke County. It was Prairie County then. There is to be a dedication of a marker, probably in the place/area Beard was held at what we call Hicks Station. It is just east of Lonoke on Hwy 70 headed toward Carlisle at the ball park. There was a huge Union encampment there and there were men from Michigan there, so it is possible that if yours served with a Michigan group, that man served there.
It is a shame, but the event at DeValls Bluff would have been so interesting with all of this. It was last weekend. However, it will happen again next year, so keep an eye for my posting next March or there about.
There is a big display, a diorama, at the local Lonoke County Museum of the battle of Brownsville which happened in August of 1863.
Write me at MissLata@sbcglobal.net, if you wish.
Good luck. Linda
