Ok here is a question/puzzle I have.

My g-grandfather Shadrick Jarmon McGehee and his brothers (Col. James H. McGehee and Joseph McGehee) all from Crittenden County, AR were up and down the Mississippi during the war.

James and Shadrick start out together in the Crittenden Rangers, 6th Battln Co. C. Later James is the leader of McGehees Regiment I have a lot of muster records showing where the brothers were.

My puzzle is with Col. James H. McGehee in a the book Arkansas Historical Quarterly on page 133 it talks about his river raids and mentions that he was killed in a Missouri raid. This is also recorded in a book on the History of Crittenden Co.

In my research I find James, Jarmon, and Joseph in St. Francis Co. after the war listed together on the tax books in 1865. I also have James H. McGhee age 35 born in TN on the 1870 census in Franks Township, St. Francis County. He is listed as a Retail S. Dealer, with wife Catherine and 3 small boys. I never find another record on him and the St. Francis Co, records are hard to read and not indexed well. (1850 census James is 15 Ive never found James on the 1860 census so not sure where he was)

Shadrick Jarmon leaves the area and moves to Montgomery Co. AR marries at 40 and has his family including my grandfather. His wife applies for pension.

Josephs wife also applies for pension.

Any idea why James is listed as dead when I find signs of him alive and well? A guy at the History Commission said that officers would not apply for pension, is this true?

Thanks,

Janet McGhee Sanders
