Re: Woodruff's Battery at Nelson's Camp

From The Alexander Papers:

6/15 Nelson [10th Tex Inf] at Brownsville to Newton- I have six days rations. I can march to Devall’s Bluff in one and a half days. It will take say eighteen to twenty of the small cars I see on this Road. I can start in one hour. There were no cars at Brownsville last evening.

6/18 Gen Rust to Hindman re supply difficulties and Texans-I am starved out here and will move my camp and wagon train with one thousand men to the south bank of Des Arc bayou, when we can be supplied from Little Rock and Richland perhaps this evening. With the balance of my force I will start this evening to White River above Batesville with two or three days rations. Col Parsons [12th Tex Cav] is using all the artifices of a contemptible demagogue to produce dissatisfaction and mutiny among his men. If the troops are incited to mutiny I have not the power to suppress it, as they are all Texans

6/18 Shoup at Devall’s Bluff at 6 p.m., and Des Arc on 19th to Hindman -Find that Col Nelson is at Clarendon with five Co’s-The remainder of his Regt he left here about four hours ago. Col Nelson has ordered the guns here to be removed to Little Rock

6/19 Col Nelson to Hindman aag Newton from Devall’s Bluff-I have disposed my regt on 2 Bluffs below this one Bn of ...no Cav but a few men under Capt Wheat
PS-Col Pleasants’ Regt is here under orders and supervision of Col Shoup of your staff

6/21 Hindman to Col Nelson-send Col Shoup back here and you assume command of the force at Devall’s Bluff and of 18th Tx Cav when it arrives, and proceed at once to organized them into a Bgde

6/25 Hindman to Gen Rust -... I am expecting Woodruff's btry daily

6/29 Hindman to Col Nelson cdg Fort Hindman-Watch the enemy at St Charles with a squadron

7/4 Hindman to Capt Woodruff, Brownsville-go on to Devall’s Bluff asap and report to Nelson for orders from Rust in whose command you are asgd.

7/4 Item 2-21: Note, Brig. Gen. A. Rust to Capt. Woodruff, Weaver's Btry, DeValls Bluff, Arkansas; Order to move his unit to Des Arc at once, July 4, 1862

7/4 Hindman to Col Nelson cdg Nelson's Bgde Fort Hindman-Instruct Col Darnell to divide his command into detachments to go out and destroy food stuffs on enemy line of march. Others of our troops are doing the same thing

7/4 Special Orders Army of the South West #23-The Army of the South West is reorganized as follows:
...
Woodruff's battery assigned to McRae's Brigade of Rust's Division

7/8 Hindman to Gen Rust and Capt Dunnington, Col Nelson-Devall’s Bluff our position on White no longer tenable and no value if we could hold it move from there with secrecy

7/13 Rust to Hindman-
McRae’s Bgde and Woodruffs Btry left for Little Rock this morning. Col Nelson’s Bgde with Daniels Btry will march in the morning as the dismounted Texans and Pratt’s Btry. I will order to move the ________MUCH DAMAGE______
I entertained of the Cav deserting. I hope will have them arrested at any Cost. The two Capts who led them were in the command that was conspicuous for its cowardice. I denounced them for disgraceful cowardice. Col Nelson agrees with me in the opinion that the reorganization had better not be announced until after the dismounting of the Texans is performed and we get across the river. A. Rust.
Col. Sweet has been active and inspiring.

7/13 to R. W. Johnson Cdg Post Pine Bluff-Gen Hindman has dismounted some of the Tex Cav. Many of them are deserting and will attempt to cross the river at Pine Bluff. The Gen desires you to picket all the roads as well as the river. Arrest all soldiers attempting to cross upon any pretence whatever and report. J. P. Wilson staff officer

7/18 Special Orders Army of the South West #37
Capt Woodruff 's arty to move to Col Nelson’s camp and report to him and to reorganize per conscript act electing officers

8/1 HQs Army of the South West Circular- The misconduct of a comparatively small number of bad men is bringing all the troops into disrepute. Through mistaken feeling of Kindness, their offences have been again and again forgiven, or else but, lightly punished. - This course has increased, instead of lessening, the evil. A different one will henceforth be adhered to. -Discipline, of the strictest sort, will be enforced, at all hazards.
The severest penalties will be inflicted, without hesitation, upon offenders of all grades. Desertion, Mutiny, Disloyalty, and Plundering, or any attempt at either, or manifestation or expression of any such intention, will be punished with death.

With the light guns in '61 -'65 By W. E. Woodruff. Late Major Art., C. S, A.

We arrived at Little Rock sooner than was expected, in June. After a day or two there, rumors of efforts of the enemy on White River made it appear that an early movement of the enemy might be expected from that direction, toward Little Rock; and we were ordered over to Bayou Meto, and camped near the Pine Bluff road crossing on the north of that stream.
A few days later we had hurry orders to return to Little Rock and camp three miles out on the southern military road near the Texas camp of General Nelson, and were instructed to place the battery bearing on the camp.

It afterwards appeared that dissension was rife among the Texans of the camp and that an outbreak might occur. Nothing the captain knows ever did occur, and a few days later we were ordered to the vicinity of Devals Bluff, to help stay threatened attack by Federal gunboats on White River.

Quite an affair occurred at St. Charles a day or two previous to our arrival, which resulted in the destruction of a Federal gunboat, by a crew of naval men under command of Captain Fry

July 18, 1862 Thar is a great deal of excitement in the camp as it seems they intend to get up a mutiny in the regt-that were 7 Co's who refused to obey orders anymore unless they...

Granbury's Texas Brigade: Diehard Western Confederates By John R. Lundberg

6/6/62 By this date they had reached Camp Texas. Soon after orders came to go to Devall's Bluff

6/12 Passed through Little Rock

6/17 Reached Devall's Bluff and camped

In the third week of Jul, Nelson took command of his own brigade of the 10th Tex, 15th Tex DC , 17th Tex DC, and 18th Tex DC. and battled a mutiny among his men that broke out the same week

On 7/17 & 7/18 Seven entire Co's of the regt threatened to mutiny and desert complaining of hard discipline and inactivity. LtCol Mills [10th Tex] made a speech and most of the men returned to duty, but 40-50 held out to the last. These were arrested and taken to Little Rock where Hindman threatened to have every 10th man shot if they did not return to duty. This seemed to work and the Texas returned to their commands the next day.
Pvt Isaiah Harlan of Co G attributed this mutiny to the fact they were camped among Arkansas troops, most of whom were said to be dissatisfied. Whatever the motive, the infantrymen returned to duty and averted a showdown.
Desertions continued to be a problem and on 8/1 Nelson ordered the execution of 4 soldiers convicted of repeated desertion; and 10 days later he had another 5 men executed.

A week later they relocated to a camp near Austin, Ark, known as Camp Hope. [They were here for the rest of the summer and early fall.]
