Well, that is a good question. Apart from the info which I have given you, I don't know how to further describe the sword. On the left hand side by the handle, it is stamped "Rotherwood Arsenal." On the opposite side near the handle, it is stamped "CS", and under it "1862." On each side of the middle of the blade, and I did not notice this until I got it home and put it in a strong light, it is very beautifully etched in large caps "CSA." The sword and scabbard are very rusted, but some one has oiled or greased them recently. I would send you a picture but I do not know how to send pictures on the internet. The shield on the handle appears to be made of brass. The handle appears to be wrapped in some type of fish skin which is wrapped with old copper wire. the shield is one-piece, with decorative ornamentation. The stampings on the blade may have been made after manufacture. However, the beautiful etching has me wondering. thank you again. Earl
