My g-g-grandfather, Wilson Lumpkin Hill (Habersham County), served in Co. B of the 6th GA Cavalry. He appears to have surrendered at Goldsboro, NC, with the remains of the Army of Tennessee in April 1865. Hill was one of my mother's paternal ancestors. If he did indeed surrender at that time, it's very likely that he would have marched past one of my father's paternal ancestors, Pvt. Jonathan Faler, Co. A, 177th Ohio Inf., as his regiment acted as provost guard during the surrender. It's interesting to think about these two unrelated ancestral enemies in such close proximity--that they were completely unaware that they would eventually be the progenitors of a family of common descendants via my Georgian mother and Michigan father. Had they been aware of this fact, they might even have been horrified! Life is strange.
