Wofford had seen the elephant in the Mexican War, killing a Mexican soldier with a lance, and finishing as a Captain. He had no trouble raising the 18th Georgia. My GGF and two grat uncles were in Co. A, The 18th was assigned to and adopted by the Texas Brigade, which Worrord commanded at Antietam, in Miller's cornfield. The 18th and the 1st Texas suffered heavy casualties. At Spottsylvania Wofford and one of my uncles were wounded. Both went to Georgia to recover. My uncle was captured at Roswell in July 1864. My other uncle was captured at Cedar Creek in October, 1864. Wofford's Brigade was in Kershaw's Division at Cedar Creek. In January, 1865, when he was again in Georgia, Gov. Brown assigned Wofford to command the northern district of Georgia. He wanted his brigade sent to him in Georgia, but Davis refused. Wofford organized a motley group of bushwhackers, deserters, and unatahhed soldiers into a cohesive unit. He surrendered in May, 1865, at Kingston, Georgia. Stan
