Thanks for posting this John. I had completely forgotten about Anderson's memior. Thomas Anderson was a scandanavian emigrant who became Watie's adjutant. I've found no other record of his recruiting expedition. There is a Union report that Watie was in southern Kansas on the Neosho, 20 miles south of Osage Mission, and had been joined by some Osage in Sept 1862. Broke Arm's Battalion is mentioned in the ORs and listed in the organization of troops in the Trans-Miss. I can find no other mention of a connection between Watie and the Comanche though in Union reports there are many instances of Comanche and and others harrassing trade on the Santa Fe Trail in the region Anderson mentions. The Union reports do not indicate any suspicion that these Indians were in anyway allied with the Confederates. The Confederate Treaties with the tribes of the Leased District and the Staked Plains promised each male would be supplied with a flintlock rifle but I find no record that was carried out. My guess is the bands Anderson refers to were not the bands with which Pike made the treaties in 1861. Broke Arm's Battalion was apparently armed with both percusion and flintlock muskets and rifles as there is document for showing they were provided a supply of flints as well as caps. I'll keep looking. Please share any further info you find on these "companies".
