Felix J Staton was Joseph P Staton's brother. Joseph Staton would never apply for a Confederate pension as he was a wanted man from his actions in Ill. It was considered murder regardless of the circumstances and there is no statute limit on that "crime". Following his escape in Tenn. he went to the area of Sulphur Springs, Sulphur Bluffs Texas. My father Hugh J Staton grandson of Joseph Staton, was born 1906 in Sulphur Springs Texas. His father, Augustus Lee Staton was son to Joseph P Staton by first wife Mary Short in Ky. That area of Texas appears to have been a sanctuary for Confederate veterans. A Lee Staton married Florence Bell Mahaffey daughter of Hugh Washington Mahaffey CSA veteran. Her mother was a Gregg. Two of her sisters married Kimberlin brothers who rode with Quantrill and were also members of other CSA regiments. The Gregg name is listed as members of Quantrill's forces. I doubt that any of this was accidental. My father told me that Joseph hid his past even in Texas. There are several named Short in CSA regiments from Ky. but I do not know Mary's family at all, only that she was 1st wife of Joseph. John E. Staton
