Henry and William Estep's West Virginia cousins had a similar experience as far as being listed erroneously as 'deserted'.

Jonathan Estep and David Baldwin were both wounded fighting with the 8th VA Inf (USA) at Cross Keys on June 8, 1862. Jonathan was a Sergeant and spent many months recuperating in hospitals. He was listed as deserted shortly after the battle and when he finally returned to his regiment, he was busted to private. It wasn't until Feb. 1863 that things got sorted out and he was restored to his original rank.

David Baldwin was wounded in the right leg. He was given a 30 day furlough to return home and recuperate. I'm not sure why he wasn't admitted to a hospital. There must've been some form of transport to get him from the Shenandoah Valley to Kanawha Co. When he didn't return after 30 days he was listed as deserted. Three months after being wounded, he returned to the regiment and was exonerated of his desertion charge because it was acknowledged that he was unable to procure transportation for a return and was hardly expected to walk the many miles on a newly wounded leg. That wounded leg gave him a permanent limp for the rest of his life.
