You have stumbled on one of the mistakes of the compiled military service records. The Union army called another unit the 5th Louisiana Cavalry. This unit was never officially known by that number and had no connection with the "real" 5th Louisiana Cavalry Regiment commanded by Colonel Richard Capers. There is practically no historical information on the unit in which Erskins served.
