port hudson national cemetary

i had read some articles on the battle of port hudson recently and then found myself working near port hudson. i took time to visit the national cemetary one day and walked the many rows of grave markers. the cemetary is well kept and a pretty place. i became puzzled when i couldn't find any confederate markers. i ask a grounds keeper where i would find the area where confederate soldiers were buried. much to my surprize no csa soldiers are buried there. after recieving some pamplets i learned that the csa soldiers were buried in the trenches where they died. 4000 union troops and 500 confederate soldiers were killed in the battle at port hudson. i cant understand why the confederates were left where they died and not laid to rest with the respect like the other soldiers. i just wanted to share this info with those who didn't know. thanks,
