Dan:

My wife's extended family member, Colonel Numa Augustin, commanded the Orleans Guard regiment formed in early 1861, and was a Major in the Louisiana Legion prior to 1861. Numa was the younger brother of ggggreat grandfather Brigadier General Jean Baptiste Donatien Augustin who commanded the Louisiana Legion from 1845 through 1850.

The state militia act of 23 JAN 1862 required a complete re-organization and re-enrollment of units composing the state militia, so the French Regiment/French Brigade which existed prior to that date is not necessarily the same as the French Brigade of record afterwards. That may be a technicality, but there was a great deal of discussion of this in the period newspapers which is where I got a lot of my information. Another ancestor, Dr. Jean Francois Beugnot, was the regimental surgeon of the French Regiment in 1861, and Surgeon of the French Brigade in 1862.

I will be very interested in anything you find on Numa.
