Simmons in 3rd Mo Cav NOT at Ft. Davidson....fyi

Hi Walt -

Received the CSRs from Broadfoot Soldier Search yesterday afternoon for the mysterious Alfred L. Simmons and James J. Simmons, both in Co. K, 3rd MO Cavalry.

It appears that James J. Simmons was captured near Big Black Bridge, Mississippi during June 1863, so he was definitely NOT at Ft. Davidson in 1864.

His CSR contained some interrogatory docs from when he was being held at Camp Douglas in Oct. 1863. He (~16 years old) was apparently from Greene Co. MO but was enlisted at Pocahontas, AR in Dec. 1862 by a Captain Sapp.

Am guessing he was part of the Mississippi 3rd MO Cav. Battalion as per the NPS info below?

The CSR for Alfred L. Simmons, Co. K, 3rd MO Cav. was very skimpy. All that exists apparently is a card indicating that he enlisted at Pocahontas, AR also in Dec. 1862. It is entirely possible that he is indeed by GG-gf Alfred L. Simmons who served in Co. I, 7th Ark. Inf. since he was sick at Nashville TN in Dec. 1861 and might have recovered enough to "jine up" with Captain Sapp in Pocahontas, AR the same time James J. Simmons did.

At this time, I do not know what relationship existed between James. J. Simmons (from Greene Co. MO) and Alfred L. Simmons (from Fulton Co. AR)-- perhaps cousins, etc.? This James J. Simmons from Green Co. MO was definitely NOT the brother of Alfred L. Simmons from Fulton Co. AR.

Another puzzle re the 3rd MO Cav. re some more possible relatives of mine. The following STALLCUP men are listed:

Stallcup Solomon MO 3rd Cav. Co.H
Stallcup S.P. MO 3rd Cav. Co.H
Stallcup Peter MO 3rd Cav. Co.H
Stallcup James T. MO 3rd Cav. Co.H
Stallcup James MO 3rd Cav. Co.H

They may be possibly related to my ggg-gm Margaret Stalcup Jackson, who lived in New Concord, Calloway Co. KY. Her brother James did live in Calloway Co. KY before the war, but may have relocated to Missouri.

I am therefore VERY interested in finding our more (age, home county, etc.) info re these Stallcup men in the 3rd MO Cav.
.
thanks for any/all help, ideas, suggestions, etc.!

From the NPS unit info website:

"3rd Missouri Cavalry CSA
Commanded by Col. Colton Greene; Lt. Col. L. A. Campbell; Lt. Col. D. Todd Samuel; Maj. Thomas J. McQuidy; and Maj. James Surridge. It was formed from the 3rd Missouri Battalion in 1862. It began its service in the engagements at Vicksburg and fought its final major engagement at the Battle of Ft. Blakely, Alabama on 1-9 April 1865. Commands this unit was assigned:
• Gate's Brigade, Little's/Hebert's/Greene's Division, Army of West Tennessee
• Greene's Brigade, Bowen's Division, Price's Corps
• Missouri Brigade, Bowen's Division, Dept. of Mississippi and East Louisiana
• Missouri Brigade, French's Division, Army of Tennessee
• Missouri Brigade, French's Division, Dept. of Mississippi and East Louisiana

3rd Battalion Missouri Cavalry CSA
Commanded by Lt. Col. Leonidas C. Campbell, Lt. Col. D. Todd Samuel, and Maj. Thomas J. McQuidy. Following the defeat at Pea Ridge (Battle of Elkhorn Tavern) 7-8 Mar 1862, the unit was sent east of the Mississippi as dismounted cavalry in Green's Brigade, Price's Division, Army of West Tennessee. There it saw action at the Battle of Corinth (Mississippi) 3-4 Oct 1862 and the Battle of Hatchie Bridge (Mississippi) 5 Oct. 1862. In late 1862 it was increased in strength and became known as the 3rd Missouri Cavalry Regiment.

[Note: A second 3rd Battalion Missouri Cavalry was formed west of the Mississippi river in mid 1863. It was known to have served in Marmaduke's Cavalry division and saw action at the Battle of Helena, Ark. on July 4, 1863. It is possible that some of the names in this second unit may have gotten mixed with the first. It may be necessary to obtain the soldier's individual military record in order to determine which unit he was assigned.]"
