What I found about Dr Larkin Wesley Hunt is that "at the outbreak of the Civil War he enlisted as a surgeon in the Confederate Army and served with Captain Dave Craig of Callaway Co., Mo., under the command of General John B. Clark. Dr Hunt was in the Battle of Moore's Mill, Callaway Co., Mo., on Jul. 28, 1862 and attended the wounded for four days and nights without sleep or rest. On Nov. 4, 1862, he was wounded and relieved of his duties by Gen. Clark.". This is the relation of a gniece of Dr Larkin Wesley Hunt on about 1960.
"The West Plains Weekly Quill" from April 1934, tells in his obit "He lived in Montgomery County, where he enlisted as a surgeon in the Confederate army at the outbreak of the Civil War.....and camped near the old town spring here, where the new post office building now stands (in West Plains)... In later years he recalled that when he passed through West Plains there were only a few shacks standing, the town having been deserted during the war and practically all of the homes and store buildings destroyed by marauding armies."
“The Howell County Gazette reports on 19 April 1934 in his obit “……During the time he was in the army, he became attracted in the Ozarks when he came through West Plains on October 18, 1862 and camped near the old town spring where the post office now stands. At that time, the town was nearly deserted, only a few shacks were standing as many of the houses and buildings were destroyed by soldiers. …” The obit does not speak of the presence of Old Confederates.
Do these tales stand up to historical critic? What I know is that Larkin (26 years of age) lived near the battle field of Moore's Mill in 1860 (census of 1860). A captain David W. and colonel Clark, Jr, John B. (later general) were in the 9th Regiment, Missouri Infantry.
What could have been his itinerary from Moore’s Mill to and after West Plains?
