There were no CSA units involved in the Camp Jackson affair. It was a group of men called out by the Governor as part of the state militia and had been called out before most notably for the Iowa border war and Mexican American war. In essence at the time the Federal government had little money and authority to enlist and enroll an army, thus the call by Lincoln to the states to call out their militia and report for duty under the auspices of US Army command. Some states did, some states did not. Some states had very limited rules by which their milita could be used. Gov. Jackson basiclly said no way I'm sending "my" militia to you Mr. Lincoln. Thus you have the strange but very real and unique circumstance of Federal troops fighting a legaly formed and independent state militia called the Missouri State Guard in 1861 and early 1862. Herein lies the question of whether the units raised by Blair et al and then rolled into Federal service as the 1st through the 5th Missouri volunteer infantry were legal or not. At the time only the Governor with the concurrence of the state legislature could call up the "militia" for duty on behalf of the state. This concern caused not a little bit of consternation in Washington DC at the time and then again when Blair et al wanted reimbursement for expenses.

Imagine today what would happen if Senator Bond or MaCaskill called on regular army troops from Ft. Leonard Wood to fire against the Missouri National Guard Armory in Rolla MO because the commander there supported a political foe of one of the senators. And without consulting his superiors as to the validity of the order, the commander at Ft. Leonard Wood did! Thats analagous to what happened at Camp Jackson. A mess indeed. :>)
