Neil,

Could your reference to the execution of ten men be the "Palmyra Massacre," which took place at Palmyra, Marion County, on 18 October 1862? I seem to recall from reading that those were Colonel Joseph Porter's men, not Poindexter's.

I looked in the Missouri State Archives both for soldier records of a Fawks or similar spelling or in the provost marshal records. I found nothing on a Fawks or similar name being executed in soldier records, but a George H. Fawkes from Chariton County was wounded while a member of Clark's command of 3rd Division, Missouri State Guard. This man attended a 10th reunion of the UCV at Joplin in 1906, so he obviously wasn't killed during the war.

However, in the provost marshal records for 28 October 1862 of Randolph County there is a citizens petition for release of Edward H. Fawks and Levi Fawks from prison at the Alton Military Prison, whom General Merrill imprisoned for being part of Poindexter's men. This is in Reel Number F1589, Frame Number 1064, File Number 2663. The soldier record for at least Levi and perhaps also Edward indicates that they surrendered in Shreveport, Louisiana in 1865.

There is something in the back of my memory about the execution of this Fawks guy, but I can't place it offhand.
