The date on the Memorial states: Sept. 25, 1862. The execution order states that the men are to be executed on Friday Sept 26, 1862. (I checked an 1862 calendar and Sept 26th was on a Friday). 'The Missouri Statesman' – Columbia, MO, October 10, 1862 has an article about the execution and states that on the 25th, the men were separated from the other prisoners (which were sent to other prisons) and held overnight. They were executed in the late morning on Friday (26th). The paper lists him as G.H. Fox. I suspect whoever assembled the info used on the Memorial used the newspaper article and took the date of Sept 25 (when the prisoners were separated) and missed that they were held overnight and used the incorrect spelling of Fox' initials.
I never noticed the inaccurate info on the Memorial even though I have researched the executions and have seen the Memorial several times. (Can't see the forest .....)
Thanks,
Craig
