Re: Macon/Huntsville-Some Not Executed

Earl,

I see this article came from the Rocky Mountain News, published by Wm. Byers. Do you have access to their archives?

I am interested in Charley Harrison and Carroll H. Wood and looked at your and Bruce's 2006 postings on Harrison in this forum's archives. I am transcribing Emily's Weaver's Civil War letters. She lived in Batesville, and as a 16-year-old was arrested in St. Louis, tried and convicted of spying and sentenced to death - but escaped and was later reprieved. Carrol H. Wood married in '63 in Batesville, Emily's first cousin, Nannie Wilson [ for whom Jo Shelby's camp across the river from Batesville was named].

I have been trying to find out more about Wood and Harrison in Utah and Colorado. How and why did Wood become a bodyguard to someone who was such an expert in fire arms? I have found a reference or two that suggests they may have been "destroying angels." On the other hand, I find absolutely no proof of that. I know Charley arrived in Denver riding double on a fine race horse after saving his friend from hanging ... that Bill Hickman mention a Charles Harrison in his book , but only that he was going with Harrison to see abou a stolen horse of Harrison's... How did Carroll Wood get the title?... His father Judge, and later Representative, Wm. T. Wood was prosecuting attorney in the case against Joseph Smith, et al.

Wood eventually became Adjutant General of Arkansas, and he and Nannie lived in the best house in Batesville.

Harrison wintered some in North Arkansas in early '63. He got a coat and some fancy trim in Little Rock from the AG.

Thanks for any help.
