You've been able to make a lot of progress there John. This regular Confederate company, operating in north central Missouri in the summer of '64 in the midst of a mass of Confederate irregulars, is finally stepping out of the shadows.

I haven't been idle either and have had a breakthrough in the question of relationship between Tom Todd and W.C. Todd. The unit's (Company E, Perkin's Battalion) two most prominent members, Tom W. Todd (because he was its leader), and W.C. Todd (because he was the only one in it to leave behind a memoir), can now be definitively be tied together as being cousins. And the key, strangely, is due to the obscure third member of the company, Joseph D. Todd.

The biography for Dr. Joseph D. Todd in the 1887 History of Vernon County, Missouri, identifies his father as being Thomas D. Todd.

The obituary for Dr. Joseph D. Todd in the May 30, 1930 issue of the Southwest Mail and Weekly Post, page 2, also identifies his father as being Thomas D. Todd, and further notes that along with his father and brother, he joined the company of his cousin, Captain Thomas W. Todd, in 1863. It didn't mention the name of his brother.

The Weekly Post, in its July 26, 1907 issue reporting W.C. Todd being lost at see, stated "W.C. Todd is an attorney of Marshall, who was known in Nevada [Mo.]. He is the brother of Dr. J.D. Todd and visited Nevada many times during Dr. Todd's confinement in jail. In fact, he assisted the defense when Dr. Todd was on trial for the killing of R.T. Wall.

And not that its relevant to our purposes, as a footnote here--this post and one of John's posts in this thread mentioned Dr. J.D. Todd killing R.T. Wall. I looked into that out of curiosity, and both were prominent citizens of their community. There had long been "bad blood" between them. One morning they got into an argument. A couple hours later Wall was riding his horse down the street in front of Todd's doctor's office. Dr. Todd walked out into the street, pulled a pistol, and shot Wall in the head.

Anyway, this connects the dots between Tom Todd and W.C. Todd.
