There are several post-Chickamauga letters, including one that describes the behavior of General Wood. Bliss writes that this wasn't the first time Wood had been accused of shirking his duties during a battle. If I recall, he mentions Perryville as well as Shiloh. Bliss says that rather than defend himself, Wood left camp without a word to any of his staff and never returned.
Sgt. Bliss would have special interest in General Wood, since both men were residents of Florence, Ala. We must bear in mind that Bliss was writing to family members living in the area where Wood went after leaving the army.
