Re: "Brown's Battalion" - Columbus, MS?

Guys:

Many thanks for all the comments and research help, but, after getting the initial lead on the 15th Battalion MS SS, I have confirmed beyond a doubt that this unit not only existed, but was, in fact, not far from Columbus, MS, in June 1862, at least Co. A. This company's caption & record of events clearly shows it leaving Corinth, MS, in late May 1862 to repair the roads in advance of the evacuation of the rest of Gen. Beauregard's army on May 20, 1862. Thus, the 15th Battn. MS SS (or, at least its eventual Co. A) was in such a position to have had Capt. Love's independent company join it -- even if temporarily -- as Co. C in June 1862. Of course, I am completely open-minded about all of this, but I believe that this Brown's Battalion was the unit that eventually officially became Hawkin's SS and the 15th Battn. MS SS. Note that there was at least one field officer in this unit named Brown -- 2nd Lt. Andrew Brown of Co. A (Hawkins Company), who became the battalion's AQM. Brown was appointed May 21, 1862 by General Order No. 36 from Brig. Gen. S.A.M. Wood, and pay vouchers for him from this period exist.

Again, many thanks to everyone for all the info, leads, and the lively discussion! Love this board! -- Jim Huffman, 43rd MS
