The roll for Capt Hawkins company for June 1862 designates it as "Co A of the Pioneers of the 3rd Brigade, 3rd Army Corps." This company served under Brig Gen S A M Wood, not Brig Gen Dan W Adams. Adams was assigned to post command at Columbus MS during the late spring and summer of 1862. A battalion led by Capt Hawkins would have been known as Hawkins Battalion, not Brown's. Andrew Brown from Alabama was appointed 2nd Lieutenant under Capt Hawkins on May 21, 1862.

Units under command of Dan Adams at Columbus included the 36th, 37th and 42nd Mississippi, the 37th and 42nd Alabama, Sengstack's Alabama Battery, A. J. Owens Arkansas Battery, S C Bayne's Mississippi Battery, and Capt C P Rogers, Moore's Mississippi Volunteers. These units are named in the papers of Dan Adams during the period of time he commanded the post of Columbus MS.

A company petition of the "Kemper Fencibles" dated July 23, 1862, Okolona MS, describes the company as "independent." Officers and men expressed a wish to be attached to the 43rd Mississippi.

Even if we could place Capt Hawkins and his company in Columbus MS, which has yet to be done, there is no Company "B"; not yet, anyway. The second company was not assigned until the end of 1862. On top of that, the two-company command was always called by the name of its senior officer, Hawkins. We have nothing to show it under any other name.

If we can identify an officer named Brown who served under Brig. Gen. Adams in the summer of 1862, that would be a good place to start.
