Re: "Hawkins Battalion" - S A M Wood's Brigade

Records from May through August 1862 describe the command as a Pioneer Battalion. Evidently General Hardee intended to organize a company of pioneers from each brigade. The Arkansas brigade in this division reports a Pioneer company during June 1862. Some of the men serving under Hawkins have receipts signed by Capt C P Head, who probably led the company just mentioned. Cotesworth P Head had been 2nd Lieut of Co "K", 1st Arkansas Mtd Rifles until May 1, 1862. On May 28, 1862, Capt Head requisitioned 100 Enfield rifles and 5,000 cartridges for his company of sharpshooters. This document appears in Misc records.

Most Mississippi members who served under Capt A T Hawkins came from the 32nd Mississippi Regt. Note that each soldier has dual service files; i.e., one in the 32nd Mississippi and another in the 15th Mississippi S S Battn. In other words, company commanders in the 32nd Mississippi considered members serving under Hawkins as detailed men, not permanent transfers. In the Miscellaneous records these Mississippi soldiers have pay receipts for extra duty as pioneers.
