Re: 26th NCO uniforms/weapons
In Response To: Re: 26th NCO uniforms/weapons ()

Good to talk to you again! I asked previously about another ancestor who was with the 5th Alabama Infantry. Regarding uniforms for the 26th, several different sources have said that it was the Columbus Depot, but not which version. On one site, I even saw an old Columbus shell jacket that was credited with being from the 26th, but it was in pretty bad shape, so I couldn't determine which version it was. Weapons are going to be rough. I'm still requesting records from the State of Mississippi, to determine if he ever made 1st Sergeant, as he was a 3rd Sergeant in 1863, and that's the last record I have for him, except that he evaded capture when the 26th surrendered at Fort Donelson, and made it back to his lines. At that point, General Bragg transferred him to the 32nd for a brief period, until the 26th was repatriated through a prisoner exchange; He was then transferred back to the 26th, where he served until the end of the war. His service was 1861-1865, the whole war. In fact, before that, he was in the US Army from 1855-1860, so he's a double veteran. In case you have any records of names, he was John Oliver Jinkins (however, the Confederacy spelled it "Jenkins" on their records, and he never corrected it). I did read of one account that NCOs of the 26th were encouraged to wear sidearms if they had them, but many who did only had single-shot percussion pistols. I was hoping that he wore the 1840 NCO saber, as I am intimately familiar with sabers, both in military ceremonies and in fighting. I read in several places that this particular saber was widely used there, but I don't know if they just meant First Sergeants and Sergeants-Major, or whether it went down to other sergeants, as well. Anyhow, good to hear from you again. If you have any more information, please let me know, as this unit is harder to research than the 5th Alabama!
