David --

Sounds as if you missed my earlier post about JOJ's records following Fort Donelson. Most Confederates who escaped from Fort Donelson went to Nashville TN. From there the army retreated south over the Alabama line, and then west to Corinth MS. Along with other men from the 26th Mississippi Regt, he enrolled in Co "K", 32nd Mississippi Regt at Corinth MS, Apr 2, 1862. There are five cards for JOJ in that service file.

Matching the two service files, it appears that JOJ was absent, sick, from late December 1862, for at least eight months and probably more. On Jan 10, 1863, all former members of the 26th Mississippi serving with the 32nd Mississippi were transferred to their original companies. Of course JOJ would not have known of the order, being absent at home when the order was issued.

Considering large numbers of imported revolvers available to the Confederacy, a home-manfactured firearm would have been somewhat unusual.
