In Response To: Re: 26th NCO uniforms/weapons ()

The 26th Miss was one of the Ft Donelson regiments that was released from prison in Sept. 1862.

It wasn't long before most of these exchanged regiments were sent to Holly Springs to reinforce Van Dorn after the Corinth debacle.

Some of these units remained with the army, and some were sent as reinforcements to Port Hudson.

There are several references by these exchanged regiments as being issued new uniforms-as follows:

10/6/62 we [10th Tenn] went into camp at Clinton for reelection where we got guns and uniforms also

9/30 We [30th Tn] are to go to Price where we will be pd & draw uniforms

10/17/62 Fri (17th) we spent in Holly Springs, roaming through the pleasant camp of "Waul's Legion," passing a few pleasant hours among old friends and familiar faces. The Cav have not yet arrived, would probably arrive yesterday—they passed through here several days ago, and "were the observed of all observers." . . .
I do sincerely hope the good people of Texas will go to work at once and make up warm under clothing for our soldiers up here. The Govt is now making several hundred thousand warm, serviceable uniforms; but it will be some time before the men up here can be supplied. The 2nd Texas is bad off for under clothing. Please call on the ladies of Texas to knit socks and make up warm over-shirts. Let subscriptions be raised to make up 1,000 pair shoes at once, and forward them immediately. . . . 10/19 [41st Tenn] leave Jackson for Holly Spring, Coldwater where Tilghman was in charge of div there-Rec’d new uniforms

10/20- While stationed at Camp Pritchard near Holly Springs, the men of the 3rd Mo received new uniforms to replace their ragged and soiled uniforms by the Dixie Daughter's Society. The men upon being reissued were described as looking "more like civilians than soldiers".

Another period account described uniforms issued in Mississippi in late 1862, similar to those issued to the Missouri Brigade during the same time period. The following description of troops in Gen. Lloyd Tilghman's division were written by John K.Farris, surgeon of the 41st Tennessee Regt.
"Camp Cold Water near Holly Springs, Mississippi
Sunday, October 26, 1862
......I returned from Holly Springs about sunset, and when I got to the Regt., I found the boys all in Uniform which they had drawn. Their pants were all sky blue; their coats grey round about, with cuffs and collars trimmed with blue. Grey caps for all. This will add much to their appearance on the field though, taken their uniforms all into consideration, it is quite common and coars."

"Gen Tighlman's Division, much the largest of the two, made quite a fine appearance. They were all dressed and equipped exactly alike. They had on grey Caps and coats with sky blue pants. The coats are round abouts - the cuffs and collar trimmed with blue."

11/7 Camp Rogers No 2, LtCol Fletcher cdg 20th Ark details Capt Haven to return to Ark for clothing [new uniforms] -20th Ark
11/7 Camp Rodgers-I hereby detail Capt W.S. Haven and Sgt Stuckey, to go to the State of Ark to procure winter clothing and such other articles of bedding as can be had, having lost nearly all of our bedding and clothing on the retreat from Corinth – we are left nearly destitute of comfortable clothing for the winter. I hope our friends at home will send us articles as they can conveniently spare. Clothing from Hempstead county can be deposited at Washington for transportation.

11/3/62 Camp Cold Water, 6 miles north of Holly Springs-Voigt of Waul Legion mentions [perhaps saying rec’d on morning of 10/28] Confederate uniforms, gray jackets with blue collars and cuffs, blue pants, caps, etc-

11/12 Uniforms issued to the Nelson Artillery of Tenn, at Port Hudson in Nov,1862, appear to be of this style. They were described by Pvt. Robert Branch Tarpley in a diary entry of 11/12: "Not long since we drew some good clothing. They consisted of 2 shirts, 2 pair drawers, 1 pair of shoes, 1 gray cap, 1 gray roundabout trimmed with blue, 1 pair of blue pants, & our pay up to date."
