Note on General Canby. He was murdered by the Modoc chief Captain Jack and his his men near Tule Lake, California on April 11, 1873 while parlaying for peace. He was shot twice and his throat cut in the middle of the talks. Many of Canby's men were killed or wounded at this peace meeting.

Magee's farm is four miles up (NW) the RR from my mothers ancestral home at Eight Mile Station. A mile down the RR (SE) is the site of the Battle of Whistler or Eight Mile Creek. At my familes home is the site where after the Battle of Whistler (actually a large skirmish) the Union troopers and soldiers encamped for several days on my families property while General Canby's party went up to Magee's Farm.

Now to call it the "The Last Appomattox" is not what I would have called it. There were no stacking of arms, no folding of flags, no Confederate army to surrender, at least in person. The closest Confederate forces were at Citronelle up the railroad from Magee's Farm about twenty miles away, and probably the largest group within fifty miles. This was Taylor's train with his staff and guard flying a flag of truce, no more than thirty or forty soldiers. While Taylor was talking with Canby, Taylor's train and all of his men were captured by Union cavalry force that had made a circular run from Mobile, Ala. to try and cut off escaping Confederate troops. When the Union commander telegraphed his success of capturing the train at Citronelle he was forced to appologize and release the Confederates by General Canby's staff. After the surrender, the rest of the war for this department was sending out the official messages, rounding up all the Confederate units, at designated rendevous points, and they paroled themselves. These men rarely had to face the troops they surrendered to. Just signed some papers and went home usually administered by, now surrendered, Confederate officers. It was all pretty much an orderly affair.
