Lee's Headquarters was about a mile on one side of Appomattox and Grants was about a mile on the other. The armies were within viewing distance of each other.

I am very cautious about discribing General Taylor's surrender as another Appomattox because it leads to wrong impressions. I don't know how many family members of Confederate soldiers I've spoke to or written to that were proud to tell me there ancestor surrender at Citronelle, Ala. I blame the Confederate service records that have the notation. "Surrendered by General Taylor at Citronelle, Ala. on...." or simular records. I hated to tell them their ancestor was somewhere around the Mississippi/Alabama state line around Meridian or Enterprise, or some town in west Alabama, or walking the railroad headed north somewhere around Shubuta, and probably would never know where, but they were not Citronelle when the end came. Taylor's forces were scattered and disorganized for the most part, probably less than 10,000 men scattered over a large area. My point is people need to know the real picture of what happened to their ancestors.
