The state of society in the South and their legislation, exhibits a growing tendency to lapse back into barbarism There are but few schools, and the masses are growing up in ignorance and vice. Men resort to violence and bloodshed rather than to calm discussion and courts of justice to settle their disputes and difficulties. All classes are impatient of restraint and indluge in a reckless and lawless disregard and contempt of all institutions of society or religion which obstruct the free exercise of their passions and their prejudices....

The Christian world rose up through just such a state of things to its present mild, moral, peaceable, human, Christian and enlighten stand-point, and the South had already sunk three centuries back toward the age of barbarism.

Free society! we sicken at the name. What is it but a conglomeration of greasy mechanics, filthy operatives, small fisted farmers, and moon-struck theorists! All the northern states, and especially the New England sytates, are devoid of society fitted for well bred gentlemen. The prevailing class one meets with is that of mechanics struggling to be genteel, and small farmers who do their own drudgery, and yet are hardly fit for associations with a southern gentleman's body servant.
