Re: US Government Recognizing CS Military as Ameri

Yes, Chief, anyone alive then would have been well over a hundred. I rmember in the early 1950s that every now and then there would be news, and some times newsreels, of some old boy from one side or the other passing away. For you young folks, newsreels were shown in movie houses before the main film. In Jukly they would show the 1913 reunion at Gettysburg, with Pickett's men coming up the rise to the Union lines. Some would be pretty worn out by then, and the men in blue would go out to help them the rest of teh way into their lines. The thought moves me even now. They "got over it." This was before TV was so wide spread. We got our first TV in 1953. My first TV show was "Dragnet", with Jack Webb. My Great uncles died in 1899 and 1906. They just barely made it to state pensions, but their widows got them for years. I mentioned this somne time ago, but uncle Frank's record starts out listing his wounds, his time in Camp Douglas, upon which he blamed his rheumatism, and his current condition. Each year the expalnation got shorter. After his death, his wife, Nancy, wrote the narrative. Finally, in her last year, 1924, she wrote, "He went to the war and it killed him." She got her pension.
