Honorable American soldiers lost a war and most of their property was stolen or destroyed. Most of their descendants, at least since the 1960's, have been taught in public schools that they were traitors. Perhaps getting gypped on the pension was one of the least insults.
The Southerners who survived the War and Reconstruction worked hard to build a new life and embrace their country. The ones who died were martyrs for freedom. My opinion is they are worthy to be called America's Greatest Generation as much as any other.
