Miss Sally:
Over the last 20 years there has been a great deal of new scholarship regarding CSA leadership. We were all raised on the "Lost Cause" mythology and the near pious nature of Lee and Jackson, et al.
I am citing from memory, so forgive mistakes, and I will withdraw if shown to be wrong.
Lee and Jackson were humans whose business it was was to make war. Their humanity can be seen is such statements as:
Lee at Fredricksburg, "It is well that war is so terrible, lest we grow so fond of it."
Jackson, when asked when asked for orders during the failed Federal attack, replied "Kill them all"
These men were humans who were at their best when leading armies engaged in the killing of their enemies. I doubt either one of them would have resigned in protest over a lawful order issued to them, but that they disagreed with.
