Most of them where never heard from again.
So, some of them were heard from again. Instead of billing this as a mystery (as some web pages do), isn't it just as likely, even more likely, that among those who were "never heard from again," they simply assimilated into society, married (resulting in a change of name), had babies and settled down?
Or, maybe many of those who were "never heard from again" contacted their parents, but no record was sought or offered confirming such contacts?
