Gettysburg was a classic meeting engagement rather than a planned battle. Meade intended to draw Lee into battle along the Pipe Creek line. Knowing that Meade intended to fight along Pipe Creek, the commanding general of the XII Corps (you can't post his name on this board!) marched slowly and deliberately towards Gettysburg from Two Taverns. Hancock and others persuaded Meade to fight on the hills overlooking Gettysburg after the first day's battle.
