Re: Dick Ewell and the First Day at Gettysburg

Sounds like Longstreets plan.

Lee had two problems that Meade didn't. Lee's Army was smaller than Meade's and he was a long ways away from friendly territory.

Events in War are often dictated by the preceding events. A chain reaction of sorts. Longstreets plan had one fatal flaw that very few have ever examined. What if Lee took up a defensive position such as Pipe Creek and the Army of Northern Virginia Lost?

As a Commander you should always look to your line of retreat if something goes wrong. Lee's line of retreat was always to use the same mountains as cover that he used to get into Pennsylvania in the first place.

Meade with the larger Army and with another army in effect in the garrison at Washington DC, could have held Lee in such a defensive position and manuvered to defeat him in detail by cutting off Lee's line of retreat to the Potomac River crossings that Lee needed to get home. With Washington at his back Lee would have been surrounded. All Meade had to do was get between Lee and The Potomac.

Lee was smart enough to know this. Longstreet sometimes did think things throught all the way. Beating Meade at Gettysburg would not have caused Lincoln to surrender.
