One of Senator McCain's Civil War ancestors was a William McCane of Carroll County, MS. Though an owner of a large (2,000 acre) plantation with over fifty (50) slaves, he served as a private in the 5th Mississippi Cavalry (CS). He served briefly, then "runt off" (deserted) and died after taking the oath in Memphis, Tennessee.
I've uploaded this CMSR in a ".pdf" format to the History-Sites.Com website, if you'd like to take a look.

Just thought this might be of interest to our folks on the NVCWMB. If you know of any other ancestors of the two (2) candidates who served in the Civil War, tell me and I'll try to upload their files to the site.

P.S. The less than "sterling" service of John McCain's CW ancestor is not meant to reflect, in any way, on the candidate's heroic military service or that of his esteemed father and grandfather. If you've not read John McCain's "Faith of My Fathers", I highly recommend it. Can you imagine a life, where as a child "Bull" Halsey and Chester Nimitz visited and hunted with your grand dad?
