Re: John W. Helms - 33rd Alabama Inf

Hey Jim, thanks for that info on Don Helms. He played at our local theater over in Eunice, La. within (If I remember correctly) the last two years. I really wanted to go see him and would have probably been able to meet him but other obligations kept me from going. That was my last chance to meet any of the original Drifting Cowboys band.

I went to school with a guy whose grandfather was Clyde Baum. Mr. Clyde had done some work with Hank Williams himself. He is listed on the Drifting Cowboys website. Alas, I never got to meet Mr. Clyde either as he passed away before that opportunity arose. My brother retired from the VA hospital over in Pineville. Here is a odd bit of trivia regarding that.

The VA in Pineville is located at the spot that was once home to Louisiana State University. They had a Dean (Is that the right term?) who was named Wiilliam T. Sherman. Hank Williams father spent many years as a patient at this hospital. Seems Lon Williams was gassed during World War I and suffered the rest of his life.

It never ceases to amaze me how small the world can be.
