George your post had to do with some North Carolina's who wanted out of the United States Government. Mine spoke of injustices that happen in North Carolina, from the government that those people formed.
Sorry about what happened to your family, but I am sure as many stories could be related to the Union Army.
I've no doubt that they could as the Union Army was down South fighting a war. I do wonder how many of those stories could be told of Union soldiers in Ohio, Illinois or Indiana. In their own nation...taking the supposition that we are speaking of two countries. My view is this, one can pick incidents from both sides that may make each look bad...suspension of habeas corpus, Sherman's march to the Sea, Chattel Slavery, cotton dealings between southern planters and northern businessmen. The point is while many in North Carolina welcome the withdrawal from the United States, there was a strong element in the west that did not. Not everyone in the border States wanted secession, just as many in the North did not want to fight a war over their leaving. How North Carolina would have turned out, had they remained out the Union, we will never know now, we can only expostulate. Better or worse? We all have our own view.
