Tend to agree with your assessment. The bloody shirt--which Lee helped to paint big time--was still too fresh in everyone's memory. But you have to give credit to reconciliatory voices like Longstreet and J.S. Mosby who tried to reenter the mainstream, for whatever purpose and to whatever degree they succeeded.
