You're right Mike. Those with a vested interest through our genetic connection to people involved are the only ones who can really claim a 'right' to celebrate or remember a person or event. There's got to be a better way to honor the history of both sides and not toss the "R" word into everything. Sadly, even those with a genetic connection are not getting the real story and they don't seem inclined to learn it on their own. I know I'll never understand why these things are called "Civil Wars" because they are anything but civil.

Anything but civil: Now there's a truth, not only in spades but in bloody tunics! I really regret how the ideals both sides fought for have morphed over time into grotesquery--but then every "war to end all war" has ended the same way due to the fallen nature of man, in my view.

One of the biggest disappointments I've experienced (but which came as no surprise to anyone who bothered to pay attention) is the heightened racial divide brought about by the progressivist obsession with race. VDH has a great piece in NRO today whose thesis is that Americans in general have moved beyond the R issue, however, the post-R President himself seems mired in the same old muck. Will we ever see an end to this tired business? Inquiring minds want to know.
