The Confederacy was clearly split over the issue, however, a army wide poll, late in the war, proved by large margins, that the rank and file Confederate soldiers wanted the slaves freed to serve along side them in the war. Don't look at just one newspaper opinion, there are plenty of others. The Mobile Press Register wrote that freeing the slaves to win independence was necessary, that overall the independence was the goal of the war.
