Pam, I don't think it hurt that Lee had been offered the command of the Federal Army, while still a Colonel. Apparently "those people" knew of his qualities in advance. He is still studied today. Stonewall in battle was more like Patton, except he did not dictate what prayers his Chaplain was to use. Neither Jackson nor Lee would have ever slapped a soldier, whatever the provocation. (the one Patton hit had asked to return to the front, but was denied by the doctors. Patton did not know this at the time. The first one he slapped was a true basket case, according to the doctors. Hence his required apology.) Stan
