Re: General Sidney Johnston's Burial
Buried originally in St. Louis Cemetary N.O. the body after the War continued its aborted journey to Texas. In memory of the first burial and as memorial to General Albert Sidney Johnston (the only American full general ever KIA) an equestrian statue was commissioned. The artist chosen, the then renowned Alexander Doyle, New York/New Orleans. In consultation with William Preston Johnston, every detail of "General Johnston on Fire Eater at Shiloh" was made manifest. This wonderful bronze monument was unveiled at Metaire Cemetary New orleans in 1887. Jeff Davis was there, and in his dedication speech said it was the most perfect likeness of his friend, the General, he had ever seen! Picture attached for you pleasure. BF
