Re: Jeff Davis ambrotype on Ebay

I didn't realize it actually sold!

I am a little familiar with scam artist from my interest in guitars. Example... an early 1950's Telecaster guitar can run from the tens of thousands of dollars and up. I am almost willing to bet Ebay has sold more of them than were ever actually ever manufactured. They are easy to fake if someone doesn't know what to look for. Again, an example would be the bakelite material pickguards. You can buy one for about $40 bucks, soak it in coffee (cream/sugar optonal) until it gets that "aged to perfection" look and that will almost always fool the poor sap with too much money and not enough foresight to have these things checked into for themselves.

WBTS flags are another sucker item if one isn't careful. There is a flag from the 7th Mississippi Infantry held by the Museum of the Confederacy that comes up sale every now and then on Ebay and other auction sites. Personally I have only purchased one image from Ebay. It was stated as being a sketch of an unknown Mississippi Confederate. The late Dr. Art Bergeron looked it over and confirmed to me it was genuine, at least to the point of it being a sketch of an unknown Confederate. Whether he was from Mississippi couldn't be confirmed but it was confirmed to have been done in Mississippi. I gave it to a nephew of mine as a gift.
