Legend vs Historical Fact

Inspired by the Reconstruction thread, attached here is one of my favorite WBTS legends because it is about my ancestral community. My family who lived in Billiams Creek were one of the largest slaveowners in the county and two of the sons (they did not own slaves) went to war. You can see this story is posted in The Handbook of Texas, which is usually a very reliable source. BUT, there is no period account and I am satisfied the story is not true. BTW David Upton, the slaveowner was Hilliard Durdin.
