Wauhatchie
In Response To: Wauhatchie Reports ()

A lot of good southern soldiers loathed Jenkins (some of us descendents still do). Here in Chattanooga, I have access to the supplements, but not to any S.C. microfilm or CSR's, tho' my cousin across the lake from Columbia does. Thank you for your continued help. William Oates, in Hood's division's Alabama brigade wrote a fair account of Chickamauga in "The War between the Union and Confederacy", but he had his leg shot off the morning before Wauhatchie and didn't even get to give his biased opinions about the rest of the day (he did, as Ala.'s governor, have one of his state employees write his memoirs, "The War Between the Union and the Confederacy," if I remember correctly- a fairly good reference book if you can get past his frequent and undocumented predjudices). There are a couple of other books on Longstreet's corps about Wauhatchie that you might wish to check-out from your local library. The Texas regiments give short and concise reports from Val Giles (Rags & Hope), William Fletcher (Rebel Private: Front & Rear) and John West (A Texan in Search of a Fight);also Joe B. Polley slanders Jenkins in both his "Hood's Texas Brigade," and in "Letters to [Precious wife]." On the corps level, there is Moxley Sorrel's "Recollections of a Staff Officer;" and Longstreet's adjutant Goree's letters have been published but they have no descriptions of the Chattanooga battles. Theo Botsford co-wrote a rare history of the 47th Alabama at Chickamauga, but it is non-contributory about Brown's Ferry, etc. As always, please keep me in mind, as you encounter such reports in the future. On anniversaries of these battles, I've found that many regional newspapers published memoirs of veterans, between 1885-1915. Pardon, the poor notations, but I cannot underscore on this word processer, and the spell-checker doesn't work either. I actually was literate at one time. Please forgive, Joe
