Re: Confederate Adjutant and Inspector General's R

Mr. Martin,

This is what I know from family sources, but mostly from N Archives files on my ancestor.
Richard E. Shelton (1838-1885) was raised here in Marion County, TN but was living in Hamilton County, TN in the 1860 census. He married a Hamilton Countian. He had graduated from the University of Nashville medical dept. c1859.

Richard Shelton enlisted August 5, 1861 at Knoxville in what became Carter's 1st TN Cavalry.

There are several references to Adjutant and Inspector General's Office orders.

Special order 86/2 Apr. 9, 1863 - Richard Shelton was dropped from the rolls and "will from this day cese to be an officer of the CSA".

Special Order 32/5 -Feb. 8, 1864 - "Adjutant and Inspector General's Office, Confederate States, contains information relative to the man named on the subject mentioned above" which was reporting for duty.

There is a reference to Adj. and Insp. General's Office "Letters Received - 674 May? 1864"

There is a cross reference which says "See Personal Papers of James N Richardson, 6 Fla Inf.

There is another cross reference which says:

"See: Daniel King

Sarah Wideley"
Can you give me any suggestions on how to access the A & I G Office records? Why would there have been a file for a female, Sarah Wideley".

Richard Shelton surrendered at Asheville, NC April 22, 1865, but took the oath of allegiance at Nashville, TN May 22, 1865.

Were captured Confederates given transport to their home states?

Also, from Compendium of Confederate Armies by Stewart Sifakis, in reference to Carter's 1st TN he says for "Further Reading see the Reminiscences of Thomas B. Wilson". Is anyone familiar with this book?

Any suggestions about this will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.

Phillip Layne
