Lt Col David Montgomery Nelson b. 1845 to US Congressman Thomas Amos Rogers Nelson made a rather convoluted assent in Alvan Gillem's Brigade. Nelson was made Adjutant and promoted to Lt Col at 18. He had read the law under his father but had a penchant for drunkeness and abusiveness. He was once arrested for carrying a pistol to church. Details are lacking but there is evidence he was frequently AWOL. His father was well connected to both Parson Brownlow and Governor Johnson. Likely young Nelson was something Gillem had to deal with.
Nelson murdered former MG James Holt Clanton CSA in Knoxville Tennessee 27 Sept. 1871. Brownlow posted $25,000 bond. Two years later Nelson was found not guilty.
You ask what time is it and I just built a clock. I suspect there were 100's of Liddells Nelsons and Crittendens infesting both armies.
