When you wrote, "most likely ours", it sounds as if you're not sure what unit your ancestor joined. But you also state that you have the veteran's service file and pension papers. Both of them should clearly identify his command, and it should be easy to check Dyer's and the regimental record of events afterwards.

As it is, I'm completely in the dark. The Gallatin news article listed many markers, but I failed to find anything mentioning a skirmish that took place in November of 1862.
