Re: Flag or standard for 3rd Tenn Mounted Infantry

I am unaware of any flags associated with the 3rd Tennessee. Perhaps Greg Biggs, a prolific contributor to this board, who is an "Expert" in flags of this period, can provide additonal insite.

The 3rd was raised by the High Sheriff of Monroe County, John Crawford Vaughn and raised on May 29, 1861. Helping him raise his original company in Monroe County was Capt. George Washington Monroe who would be appointed the first Major of the regiment.

On the reorganization of the regiment, May 1862, D. C. Haskins was elected Major. I would assume Morgan then resigned his commission and returned home.

During this early period, companies raised in East Tennessee were, on formation, presented with a banner/flag. These were sewn by the local ladies and were of the First National Flag pattern, the Stars and Bars.

The number of stars varied widely, In June, 1861, the company organized in Meigs County, which would wind up with the 26th Tennessee, received two flags on successive days, one with eleven stars. another with 15 stars. Who knows the significance they gave to these numbers?

There is very little written of the East Tennessee troops, especially the 3rd and the other regiments which served in their brigade.

Originally assigned to the 5th Brigade commanded by Col. Alexander Welsch Reynolds through the Vicksburg campaign, they would wind up in November 1863 in BGen. J. C. Vaughn's Calvary Brigade consisting of: 3rd Tenn., 31st/39thTenn., 43rd Tenn., 59th Tenn., 60th Tenn., 61st Tenn., 62nd Tenn., and the 3rd Maryland Battery.

I am researching the 43rd Tennessee and have to rely on any information I can get on these regiments and those referring to Gen. Vaughn.

Only one other researcher is working on these regiments to my knowledge, that being the 59th, and I've lost track of where he stands.

Our descendants of the 43rd held a reunion near Ten Mile, Watts Bar Lake, last July. Next year, we will meet again in Vicksburg. You are more than welcome to attend. Our reunion website is located at:
